Chapter 13
I hadnât expected to screamâhell, to even cryâbut I did. It was a good thing that my imagination regarding the level of pain had failed me quite spectacularly, or else I likely would never have had the guts to go through with the change. It felt as though Glanthal had dipped my entire body into a vat of acid, and I was feeling my skin and muscles melt away piece by piece.
I screamed and screamed and still, the pain seemed to impossibly increase until the whole terrible episode began to seem surreal, as though it was someone else screaming and someone else writhing in agony. I was either on the verge of passing out, or my mind was about to break, and at that point, I would have welcomed either as long as the pain stopped.
Then from one scream to the next, the worst of the pain abruptly vanished, leaving behind only echoes of torment and the sound of my sobs. I could now feel myself digging my nails into what was probably someoneâs forearm as I clutched at it tightly. Someone was talking to me, their voice sounding as far away and faint as though they were speaking across the vast expanse of a canyon, and I couldnât make out any of the words. The roaring of my own blood in my ears and the sobs I just couldnât seem to stop easily drowned out everything else.
I tried to tune everything out as I concentrated on pulling myself together, trying to slow my rapid, shuddering breaths to something a bit less noisy. More voices began filtering into my awareness, but they were still nothing more than a cacophony of sounds to my traumatized mind. Hands also began touching my arms, my forehead, and my legs, and after the first couple of times, I tried not to flinch. It was probably just Seren and Locien trying to comfort me.
It was over.
I had survived the horrendous pain, a pain I would never have to go through again. That thought, along with the rapidly fading vestiges of pain, were what finally allowed me to calm both my breathing and my mind.
Slowly, I released my death-grip on the unknown arm and began wiping the tears from my eyes, suddenly feeling painfully embarrassed that I had actually full-out cried. I grimaced. What a great first impression I was making on everyone.
âMegan?â
I turned my head towards the voice, recognizing it as Serenâs.
âIâm okay now, right?â I couldnât help but ask plaintively. God, but my voice sounded as if I had swallowed a dozen razor blades.
A warm hand gently cupped my cheek. âItâs done,â Seren replied.
âYou may take her home now,â Glanthal said. âAlthough I do not believe it will take so long, call me at once if her vision has not returned by tomorrow.â
The rest of their conversation was lost to me as both the mage and everyone else shifted to speaking in the elven language. I felt a mild twinge of irritation as
